Our Tutors

Matt Jamison is a qualified and experienced guitar teacher based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Matt studied music and has been teaching since 2009 throughout Belfast – between schools, privately, online, and in London until recently when he moved back to Belfast.

Matt takes a very informal and relaxed approach to teaching. As a primarily self-taught musician, he understands how difficult it can be to get started and how most people have been put of music lessons since they were forced to play a recorder in primary school...

“I wanted to play guitar when I was about to turn 13 and asked about taking lessons in my school. The tutor at the time was very formal and quickly sucked the fun out of the whole thing for me. I had only started playing and immediately I was being taught quite heavy theoretical aspects of music before I was allowed to just have fun with it.”

Belfast Guitar Lessons is based in South-East Belfast, just above the Knockbreda Carriageway at Lead Hill Park, Belfast, BT6 9RW.

We can also cater to remote lessons online, and lessons at your location.

Our approach to teaching is different than most – we will teach you what you want to play. Everyone has a reason that they picked up their instrument, whether that's to pick one up and have some fun, accompany vocals or other musicians, or if you played guitar already but have lost your motivation. At Belfast Guitar Lessons, the priority is for you to enjoy your instrument and want to pick it up more.

Why taking guitar lessons in person is so much better than online-only

In a digital age, it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that everything can be learned online. While access to information and learning resources is certainly a great advantage, when it comes to mastering an instrument like guitar, there is no substitute for taking lessons in person. Here’s a few reasons why:

1. Personalised Instruction: Taking guitar lessons in person allows for a level of personalised instruction that online tutorials simply cannot match. A knowledgeable instructor can assess your unique abilities, strengths, and weaknesses, and tailor the lessons to suit your individual needs. They can correct mistakes in real-time, offer immediate feedback, and provide hands-on guidance to help you progress faster.

2. Improved Technique: Learning online might teach you how to play a few songs or chords, but it often falls short in teaching proper technique. An experienced guitar instructor will not only help you build a solid foundation of technique from the beginning but will also continuously refine your skills as you progress. Correcting bad habits early on can save you time, frustration, and potential injuries in the future.

3. Motivation and Accountability: Committing to regular in-person guitar lessons adds a level of accountability that is difficult to achieve when learning alone at home. Knowing that you have a scheduled lesson creates a sense of commitment and responsibility, motivating you to practice regularly and stay focused on your goals. An instructor can also provide additional encouragement and guidance to help you overcome any hurdles you may encounter along your musical journey.

4. Instant Feedback: One of the most significant advantages of taking guitar lessons in person is the ability to receive immediate feedback. A skilled instructor can spot errors that you might not be aware of and offer suggestions on how to improve quickly. This immediate feedback loop is invaluable in honing your skills, refining your playing, and addressing any questions or concerns that arise during the lesson.

5. Personal Connection and Support: Learning guitar can be a challenging endeavour, and it can be incredibly helpful to have someone by your side who understands your goals and can guide you through the ups and downs. Building a personal connection with a guitar instructor creates a supportive environment where you can feel comfortable asking questions, seeking advice, and sharing your progress. This personalised support system can make all the difference in your musical journey.
